Save big bucks on breakfast cereals

By MyBudget Editor

When it comes to breakfast, not only do box cereals get a bad rap for often being high in sugar, they’re also often high in price. With that in mind, our money coaches at MyBudget took a closer a look at some popular breakfast cereals to work out the annual cost for a family of four.

First, we should mention that most box cereals base their nutritional information on a recommended serving size of 35 to 45 grams. That’s the equivalent of two Weet-Bixes or half a cup of muesli.

Everyday experience tells us that most people eat significantly more than 40 grams in a single serve, so we decided to base our calculations on 50 grams. Still, if you have hungry teenagers to feed, you might want to double these numbers!

Cost per serve

  • 50 grams Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain + 1 cup of milk = $0.98 per serve
  • 50 grams Carman’s Fruit and Nut Muesli + 1 cup of milk = $0.90 per serve
  • 50 grams Uncle Tobys Plus Omega 3 Cereal + 1 cup of milk = $0.69 per serve
  • 50 grams Sanitarium Weet-Bix + 1 cup of milk = $0.55 per serve
  • 50 grams Woolworths Rolled Traditional Oats + 1 cup milk = $0.40 per serve

When we multiply these serving costs by a family of four and then multiply that figure by 365 days, the comparison is quite astounding.

Annual cost for a 4-person family

  • 50 grams Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain + 1 cup of milk = $1423.50
  • 50 grams Carman’s Fruit and Nut Muesli + 1 cup of milk = $1314.00
  • 50 grams Uncle Tobys Plus Omega 3 Cereal + 1 cup of milk = $ 1,007.4‬0
  • 50 grams Sanitarium Weet-Bix + 1 cup of milk = $ 803.00
  • 50 grams Woolworths Rolled Traditional Oats + 1 cup milk = $576.70

Sweet, sweet savings

The annual cost difference between Nutri-Grain and rolled oats for a family of four is over $800! Not to mention that each 50 gram serve of Nutri-Grain contains over 13 grams (around 3.3 teaspoons) of added sugar.

When we calculate four servings a day over a year, that’s nearly 20 kilograms of sugar consumed by the family from cereal alone. It compares with just half a gram of naturally occurring sugar for each serving of oats.

Definitely food for thought!
