Welcoming Saran to MyBudget

image1Over the last few years, I’ve been involved with Project Gen Z, a group of Australian entrepreneurs on a mission to educate a million young people about entrepreneurship all around the world by 2030.

As part of Project Gen Z’s mission, I joined a group of international entrepreneurs who visited Cambodia in 2016 to run a series of workshops called ‘Dare to Dream’. These were provided in partnership with Sunrise Children’s Village, a charity that provides care and accommodation for children in need.

The ‘Dare to Dream’ workshops were presented to students aged 13 to 25. The aim was to educate and inspire them to be change agents in their own lives and communities. The workshop I delivered focused on goal setting and the importance of budgeting to promote healthy financial habits.

During my time in Cambodia, I had the pleasure of meeting Saran. The Sunrise Village provided Saran with a home and education for seven years. After ‘Dare to Dream’, Saran set herself three goals and achieved them all. She now has a job and has saved up to buy a motorbike and a new mobile phone. She is a courageous and inspiring young woman who supports herself and her brother on just $250 a month, $150 of which goes to rent. She is truly an inspiration — and a great budgeter to boot!

Saran won an ‘Apprentice’-style competition that was run as part of the ‘Dare to Dream’ workshops. As part of her prize, she is now visiting Australia to spend time with entrepreneurs and their businesses in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. This week, we welcomed Saran into the MyBudget family at our Adelaide head office. Over the next few days, she’ll spend time with me and other managers in the business seeing how we do things and gaining insights that she can take back to her community.

Saran had this to say about her experience so far:

“Hello! My name is Saran. I’m from Cambodia. I won the business challenge to come and visit Australia for three weeks. I have been to Sydney and Melbourne. I enjoyed it so much and I went to many famous places.  Moreover, I am in Adelaide now. Tammy is taking me to her company, MyBudget. It is amazing. I learned about how to work in a team, good customer service and that the system is really different from Cambodia!”

It’s an honour to have Saran visiting us!
